Introduction

DEPSs Project: SUMMARY

Funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Competitiveness: Research Project FFI2016-77540P.

The DEPSs Project takes an interdisciplinary, integrative and contrastive approach to the study of emergent, peripheral discourses; those minority discourses that confront the more public and hegemonic discourses of the community. The main aim of the research group is thus to study how these minority discourses come into being by means of specific linguistic, cognitive and social strategies; and how official and these peripheral discourses interact. To reach this aim, the DEPSs Project is based on:

  • Cognitive Theories of Language, which in their most recent forms have shown a new interest in the relationship between language, cognition and society, and in language in use, as studied by Socio-Cognitive Linguistics;
  • Critical Discourse Analysis, an approach which has recently moved in the direction of a more cognitive perspective on language and discourse. Thus, the key analytical and methodological concepts applied are: embodiment, identity, multimodality and language in use.

The proposal, then, approaches the study of discourse as a complex social and cognitive process and aims ultimately to contribute to making the minority discourses analysed visible both to the academic community and to society in general.
